"Behind the Music of Civilization V
After more than two years of work, the music of Civilization V was finally completed in July 2010, thanks to the work of composers Curran and Knorr, and at the very end of the project, Ian Smith and Roland Rizzo who helped finish things up. Of the nearly four hours of original music created for the game, roughly an hour and 45 minutes were recorded with the Prague Filmharmonic orchestra conducted by Andy Brick (himself a composer for games and film) over the course of five days this past May in the Czech Republic.
"We recorded the pieces through from beginning to end after only a couple of run-throughs," recalls Curran. "It was amazing how skilled these players were and how adept Andy Brick was with them. It was a great thing to be a part of -- I loved every minute of it. In spite of the fact that sampled orchestral instruments are getting better all the time, and we are getting more skilled at using them, they are only a substitute for the real thing. The difference is pretty evident.""
